Nucleaire energy and security: how’s that? In Singapore, they think so.The country is considering underground nuclear power stations, an idea by Hooman Peimani researcher.
All world leaders seem to have had a bit of nuclear energy. Although it is only because the
electorate they impose. But the idea of ââPeimani, scientist at the National University of Singapore, even seems to make the public feel.
He proposed for reactors to be buried. And the government of Singapore is excited about the idea. The situation in Japan benefit that decision.
The idea is quite simple. Place the reactors at about thirty to fifty meters in hard rock and let them do their job. If it goes wrong, the reactor is already surrounded by stone and radiation can not escape.
The cost of such a reactor are not trivial. To make it all manageable, the buried reactor must not be to big and it wolud give less energy. But it is feasible. In fact, the designs for these mini-reactors (which in itself is a lot safer than the larger specimens) are ready.
It is a great solution, but Japan does not think it is a good idea for their country. Areas that sometimes may have to deal with earthquakes, are not eligible for burial reactors. It is simply too dangerous. This also applies to countries with a high water table.
The government of Singapore is currently examining options. The situation in Japan will obviously make us to search for more safe ways of getting the energy.
